PART ONE:
  1. 1984 Anticipation Guide Survey- Complete and Submit
  2. Reflection in digital or spiral notebooks:
    • What surprised you about the survey results? What points that your peers made did you agree with? What did you disagree with? Describe how you feel about beginning to read 1984.

PART TWO:
  1. George Orwell's 1984 Background Research Jigsaw Groups
    1. Divide:
      • Each group member chooses one research topic: George Orwell, Totalitarianism, Dystopian Society, Orwellian, Big Brother, Social Apathy
    2. Research:
      • Each group member moves to expert group to research topic and create a shared Google Slide Presentation of maximum three slides with MLA citations (must use your Sweetwater Schools Google Drive accounts). Each expert group will work together to prepare slides to bring back to your home group including the following criteria:
        • Definition and visual
        • Topic's connection/relevance to social Context of 1940's with evidence (how topic relates to historical time period)
        • Evidence of Orwell's and/or society's philosophies on the topic
      • Return to your home group to combine each of your group members slides to create ONE Google Slide Presentation covering all of the background categories
    3. Submit the link to your Google Slide Presentation to Ms. C in Jupiter Grades.

PART THREE:

1. Present:
  • Groups present to the class
  • Complete peer evaluation digitally or hard copy
2. Reflection in digital or spiral notebooks:
  • In your digital or spiral 1984 notebook, consider the question is today 1984? and reflect on the following:
    • Describe one of George Orwell's philosophical assumptions or motifs/themes of 1984 you can infer from today's research and presentations. Then, analyze a societal norm from today and how it either supports or refutes Orwell's philosophy and cite evidence and examples to support your analysis.
